A Response to My Conservative #NeverTrump Friends

Tuesday, May 24, 2016

When you differ from people you admire, you have to question yourself. After all, what is the purpose of admiring people if they aren’t capable of influencing you? So, I have had to challenge my position — stated since the outset of the Republican presidential debates — that if Donald Trump wins the Republican nomination, I will vote for him over Hillary Clinton, or any Democrat for that matter. I devoted many hours of radio and many columns to criticizing Trump. His virtually assured nomination has therefore caused me grief as an American, a Republican and a conservative....

Why Don’t Republicans Name the Enemy?

In The Wall Street Journal last week, two influential billionaires — former New York city Mayor Michael Bloomberg, a very moderate Republican, and Charles G. Koch, the libertarian chairman and CEO of Koch Industries, Inc. — wrote an op-ed piece decrying the suppression of free speech taking place at universities across America. You have to salute their good intentions. But as well-intentioned and accurate as their critique is, the Bloomberg-Koch column is largely useless. Why? Because they assiduously avoid identifying who or what acts are causing our universities to mimic fascist...

The Scariest Reason Trump Won

Tuesday, May 10, 2016

There are many reasons why Donald Trump is the presumptive Republican presidential nominee. The four most-often cited reasons are the frustrations of white working-class Americans, a widespread revulsion against political correctness, disenchantment with the Republican establishment, and the unprecedented and unrivaled amount of time the media afforded Trump. They are all valid. But the single biggest reason is this: The majority of Republicans are not conservative. Conservatives who opposed Trump kept arguing — indeed, provided unassailable proof — that Trump is not a...

A Dark Time in America

Tuesday, May 3, 2016

As of tonight, we may know if Donald Trump will be the Republican presidential candidate. And, barring unforeseeable events, it is certain that Hillary Clinton will be the Democratic nominee. Those are two reasons — of many, unfortunately — why, other than the first years of the Civil War, when the survival of the United States as one country was in jeopardy, there has never been a darker time in American history. The various major wars — the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, World War I and II, and the Korean and Vietnam wars — were worse in terms of American lives...

Why the Left Loathes Western Civilization

Tuesday, Apr 26, 2016

This month, Stanford University students voted on a campus resolution that would have their college require a course on Western civilization, as it did until the 1980s. Stanford students rejected the proposal 1,992 to 347. A columnist at the Stanford Daily explained why: Teaching Western civilization means “upholding white supremacy, capitalism and colonialism, and all other oppressive systems that flow from Western civilizations.” The vote — and the column — encapsulated the left’s view: In Europe, Latin America and America, it loathes Western...

Do Jews, Christians and Muslims Believe in the Same God?

Tuesday, Apr 19, 2016

Most Americans say they believe in God. Around the world, religious Jews, Christians and Muslims say they believe in God, as do many people who do not identify with any formal religion. But this statement is actually meaningless. To cite one example, the God in whose name some Muslim extremists cut innocent peoples’ throats and violate women cannot be the same God as the God of those who believe God condemns such actions. Who then argues that all those who say they believe in God believe in the same God? Two groups make this argument. The first consists of people who have an...

Calls for American Unity Are Either Dishonest or Naive

Tuesday, Apr 12, 2016

Just about all candidates for president regularly announce their intent to unite Americans, to “bring us together.” It’s a gimmick. If they are sincere, they are profoundly naive; if they are just muttering sweet nothings in order to seduce Americans to vote for them, they are manipulative. In his acceptance speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention, John Kerry, one of the most polarizing figures in modern American political history, said, “Maybe some just see us divided into those red states and blue states, but I see us as one America: red, white and...

A Note to Conservatives Who Are Secular

The most profound thinkers in America are conservative. There are, of course, bright liberal and leftist thinkers, but I can’t think of one who approaches the depth and wisdom of the best conservative writers and thinkers. What liberal historian, for example, approaches the understanding of life and history that author Paul Johnson has exhibited in his many works of history? Who on the left matches psychiatrist/writer Theodore Dalrymple’s insight into the underclass? What left-wing columnists understand human nature, the state of mankind, or contemporary America as do George Will,...

He’s Mean, but Is He at Least Bright?

Tuesday, Mar 29, 2016
2016-03-26T191537Z_1_LYNXNPEC2P0DF_RTROPTP_3_USA-ELECTION-TRUMP

I have said from the outset that I would vote for Donald Trump if he were chosen as the Republican nominee. I am contemptuous of much of what he does; I don’t trust what he says, and I have no reason to believe that he actually holds conservative values. But, if Trump becomes the GOP nominee, he will be the only alternative to the left ruining America for another four years. Really, though, their ruining could go on for much longer than four years. With two or three more left-wing Supreme Court justices, the left wouldn’t need to win the presidency or Congress in order to...

Judge Garland and the Left’s Disdain for Truth

Tuesday, Mar 22, 2016

The mainstream media — that is, the liberal media — share all the views and characteristics of the left. Among these is the left’s view of truth. There are honest individuals with left-wing views, and dishonest individuals on the right. But truth is not a leftist value. Everything the left believes in is more important than truth: social justice, economic equality, reducing carbon emissions, expanding the power of the state, battling sexism, homophobia, Islamophobia, racism, and above all of these, destroying its conservative opposition. The media’s coverage of...
